e'X-driver: Thanks for the offer, but I think we'd all like to keep the references within the realm of GT.

Psyfalcon: If you could do the Spot Race summaries, that would be great. The only thing that concerns me about you doing it is that you asked for a template, but I do all my HTML coding in plain text with MS WordPad, so there isn't really a FrontPage/DreamWeaver template where you can just fill in the blanks. Take a look at the source code and you should see what I mean.

I didnt mean a Dreamweaver program or the similar. I too make all my webpages in notepad, but I've never really went in far enough to make the pages pretty or seem professionally designed.

Since a few are done, the layout is finished, and it becomes mostly data entry. I'll do a test run later.

Hmm, the cell coloration that I see for the spot races does not display in Firefox. I only get a grey box with the results.

I'll check to make sure its not just me later.

The grey is much better than the previous white on black, IMO. Simple & to-the-point is good, and it reflects the straightforwardness of the Numbers...

Keep up the good work, James!

I just installed Firefox 0.9.1 to test this.

The cell coloring comes from a Cascading Style Sheet that is in another file - http://www.santiago22.com/gtbn4/gtbn.css - and it seems that Firefox doesn't read the setting. I know it's reading the file, though, because the background (grey) is showing correctly.

This reminds me of the last time I tried Netscape - I deleted it because it didn't read CSS.

Update: 14 August 2004, 2:04am PDT:

Been working on the site for a good part of the day. I'm still working on getting all the Spot Race results converted (I'm done up to SR XVI now).

Still having that issue with Mozilla Firefox not reading the CSS entries for the row coloring like IE does. I'm currently trying to figure out how to sort of trick the browser by loading a different CSS file specifically designed for Mozilla, but the best (and only haha) way I know how to implement it would be with a JavaScript, but I'm concerned about any users here that run their browsers with JS disabled.

On a brighter note, I think I've finally decided on a color scheme once and for all. When I spoke with GB earlier today (well yesterday afternoon), I told him this scheme (black text on light grey background) is the best design I think I've had so far and I'm thoroughly happy with it. In addition, I've updated the navigation bars to run horizontally under the header, rather than down the left side. This leaves more space for the main frame, and the layout of the nav bars just plain looks awesome-cool I think .

Comments or questions? Discuss.

Update: 14 August 2004, 5:38am PDT:

Before you ask: Yes, I'm still up.

Good news: After pulling my hair (figuratively), kicking, screaming, and thinking all sorts of nasty things about Mozilla Firefox, I finally figured out the problem, and as it happens, it wasn't a Firefox issue at all.

When I first learned how to do Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), I was strictly an IE user. I had based nearly every site design I did during that period on CSS implementation. After a while, I decided to try Netscape again. I found it didn't support CSS (or so I thought at the time), and promptly deleted it.

A few months ago, I deciding to try Firefox, to see if the whole Netscape/Mozilla system had improved, and during a time when IE security exploits were running rampant on the 'net. Figured it was a good time and a good idea to get used to Firefox. However, I was still frustrated by my perceived lack of support for CSS.

Anyway, the way I had my styles defined for the Spot Race Summaries was:

code:
TR.0  { background-color: #DDDDDD; color: #000000; }
TR.1 { background-color: #806C00; color: #FFFFFF; }
TR.2 { background-color: #5E5E5E; color: #FFFFFF; }
TR.3 { background-color: #590007; color: #FFFFFF; }
TR.dq { background-color: #990000; color: #FFFFFF; }
TR.hr { background-color: #0000FF; }

Basically, the TR is an HTML tag that the style is to affect. (TR starts a new row in a table.) background-color sets the color of the background (bet you never would have guessed ; the #DDDDDD is a light grey; #000000 is black; #FFFFFF is white; #0000FF is a bright blue; #806C00, #5E5E5E, #590007, and #990000 are shades of gold, silver, bronze, and red, respectively), and color sets the color of the text. The .0, .1, .2, etc. are subtypes for TR tags, and are called as follows:

code:
<tr class="0">
<td>some text</td></tr>
<tr class="1">
<td>some text</td></tr>
<tr class="2">
<td>some text</td></tr>
<tr class="3">
<td>some text</td></tr>

Basically, the class="0" tells the browser to use the style defined by TR.0, the class="1" tells it to use TR.1, and so on.

Well after much frustration and searching the web for an answer, I found a page on the World Wide Web Consortium (aka W3C; they are in charge of the specification for HTML and CSS, basically any website programming technology, and dictate how such things should work) website that checks a page to make sure its code is valid. Well, I ran it on my style sheet file and all the subtypes defined by numbers came out invalid. Being surprised by this, I prefixed the numbers with ln, so they would start with letters instead, then edited a sample page to test it. Lo and behold, the change worked! Firefox was now displaying the pages as I had intended the whole time. Of course, now I have to re-train myself to not define a subtype strictly by a number :/, but at least I've figured out how to get it to work as I want it.

Maybe Firefox/Netscape isn't such a bad browser after all...

(That concludes this session of HTML 202: Cascading Style Sheets )

Update: 11 September 2004, 12:08pm PDT:

I realized last night while working on the Spot Race histories that once the new forum goes up, I'll have to edit all the links to the SR threads because they link to the current Vol. 3 pages, and the new forum will change all the links.

So, I figure I'll work on the Driver Bios section. If you want your Bio on the site, just fill out the following information, and post it here or e-mail it to levinracer22(at)yahoo(dot)com with the subject line "GTBN Driver Bio for (your forum name)" :

quote:
Name: (your real first and last name, however you want it mentioned on the site)
Date of Birth: (month, date, and year)
Birthplace: (where you were born)
Current Residence: (where you live now)

GTRC Team: (self-explanatory)
GTRC Number: (ditto)

Career Overview: (your online racing history at GTBN)

Other: (anything else you'd like mentioned)

[edit] *DESIRED BUT OPTIONAL* a photograph of yourself, like this one.

That's all for now.

K, I'm working on the GTRC History, and I realize now I have a whole lot to catch up on...

But I'm having a problem sorting out the order of the GTRC seasons based on the pages. I'm trying to put them all in chronological order, but I can't seem to figure which ones go where.

Who wants to post each season of the GTRC, and when it took place for me? Please?

I had a big reply typed out a couple of nights ago, but lost it due to an electrical "hiccup". I was too ticked off to re-write it.

Thoasiii would know best about the older ones... I know that what is labelled GT3 Class (Small Bore) was the 'Original' GTRC... all other classes came later.

If you look in all the class results, you'll see they all have a "Season 'A'" and a "Season 'B'". That was the FIRST time that the GTRC had all the classes: GT1, GT2, GT3, and GT4. It was also the first season that used Gran Turismo 2. Everthing listed prior to that was with Gran Turismo... the original. The "A" and "B" seasons were in the Spring and Summer of the year 2000.

GTRC 2001 and GTRC 2002 are the ones that I directed.... those were with Gran Turismo 3.

Working backwards from Season 'A' will be difficult, but we might be able to decipher it. Give me some more time.

Since I've hit something of an impasse with the GTRC History, I've spent all day poking around with a vBulletin demo I signed up for earlier to familiarize myself with the configuration (colors, fonts, all that nifty display stuff).

Of course, that was a few hours ago. I'm now trying to figure out how the usergroups work, and the private forums, so when GB launches the new forum, that the team forums won't suddenly become public.

Man, this thing is advanced. Wish I was more familiar with PHP than I am, 'cause I hate the layout of some of the things on the demo pages, and wish it looked more like what we have.

Now before anyone asks why we're getting brand-new forum software if the forum is going to look pretty much the same, we're getting it for features, not appearance. Our current layout is pretty clean, but this software lacks some much-desired features (Private Messaging, Sticky Threads, Avatars, and the like).

Hopefully I can figure this stuff out in case we need an extra head around this. Figured I'd take the initiative since GB, by his own admission, doesn't understand all this stuff.

In other news, I sure do miss the GT3 Database. I wonder if we could put one together for the new site.

Then again, maybe I should finish the conversion before considering new site features. haha

It's supposed to go with the Volume 4 pages... mostly, I wasn't crazy about that lavender, but I liked the gray and the dark blue.

Now that I've figured out the templates, I could actually make it look exactly like this board, but one, what's the point of upgrading for new features if you don't use them at all, and two, I'll have to edit about every single template to do that, and I don't want to do that. I can only do so much.

The private team sections are there. When I took those pics, I was logged in as GB24Hours (hahaha), and to figure out how to set the access privileges for the private forums, I had to figure out how to only allow certain users to see them. The Bridge forum is actually a private forum, which the user GB24Hours is allowed access to, and so it shows up in the list. Team Numbers, Auto-Union, Longshots International, and the like are still there, but I didn't have any users set up that were allowed access, so the forums were hidden by the software. Someone who only has access to, say, Button's Brigade and Team Numbers doesn't really need to see all the other forums.

I'm not sure how GB wants it set up when we actually *do* get the upgrade, but I've figured out where everything is, so all he has to do is either tell me how he wants it so I can set it up, or have me teach him how to set it up so he can do it.

Hi Santi

Just a quick note to tell you that I've FINALLY got around to trimming a pic of me to add to the profiles section of your growing GTBN site.

It's been uploaded to your file serving area (kind chap that you are :tup: ) with the filename of:
http://www.santiago22.com/upload/files/profiles_pic.jpg

Feel free to trim and adapt it to your needs (you can't make me look any worse than I am in RL ).

I love these new layout proposals. I have never been more proud to be a part of this wonderfully friendly and cohesive community.

Heh, anybody who is a fan of Isuzu's and SPG's is welcome here anytime, HK!

(If that post over at GTX had been here instead, I'd swear you were trying to suck-up to me or somethin'!)

Anyway, things are a bit slow here atm as you can see.... but yes, changes are in the works. Just waiting for me to take action, I guess.

More like waiting for me to finish the silly spot race pages... :/

I work on like 3 other websites, so, I've been spending so much time in HTML code lately that I kinda got burned out on in and got lazy. Guess I have to start working on Volume 4 again.

Why does being lazy have to be so danged fun?

Update: 22 November 2004, 12:32pm PST:

• Just made the coolest navigation page ever for the Spot Race Histories, all done with just a few lines of JavaScript that single-handedly made about 10 files completely unnecessary. Check it out!

I agree - excellent work there Santi :tup:.

On a more ego-centric note, thank you also for the very flattering write-up in the Driver Bio's.

Given the frustration I've felt trying to put something togther for the latest '9 Boards' series it did me the world of good to be reminded of past efforts. I'm honoured.
