Where did your board name come from? Why did you choose to be known as that?

Mine is simple. I wanted to be anonymous. I had a reason, but it doesn't apply any more. Something about abuse of company IT equipment - do I need to spell it out?

Mines obvious I think, I run 'Sibes'.
Although I'm gonna change it to just Husky, as thats what it gets abbreviated to here!

It's a good thing that it doesn't apply anymore, since many of us know your name now.

So there is nothing more too it than you wanted to be anonymous and Player2 was the first anonymous name that came to mind?

In my case, it came from a fantasy baseball team I have. When I first started the team, everyone else had the most intimidating sounding names like the Crushers or Brawlers.

( baseballmanager.com is the fantasy baseball game, and my other online board I frequent under the name of Earthworm Jim is also there at http://bbs.baseballmanager.com/~bbs if anyone cares)

So to be different I tried to think of the least intimidating name I could think of, and I came up with the Earthworms. Nightcrawler was just another name along the same theme, but I screwed up when I first registered and must have mistyped my e-mail address. So I had to do it again and added "1" to the end of my name.

A long story, but I made up for that by also being very boring.

As far as I know, you can't changed it to Husky, Huskyboy. Except by reregistering under the new name.

Mine comes from Van Dango, the last band I played guitar in - a mix from Van Halen (for the younger drivers, they used to be a great band but all incarnations after Diamond Dave just sucked ) and Fandango (the best of all ZZTop albums!). That kind of reveals my age huh. The name is short, unique and still gives Crazyhorse plenty of room to make fun of it.

Mine comes from one of my early jobs about 10 years ago. I was working as an egg cook in Perkins restaurants. My best friend always worked alongside me, and his last name was Grill. We were listening to Beastie Boys' Paul's Botique, and there's a song 'eggman' on it, and people just started calling me that and it stuck. So we were 'eggman and grill', the fastest cooks anyone had ever seen.
The reason for the two 'n's at the end is a bit simpler and more boring... Every website I went to register on wouldn't let me have eggman for handle, so my handle grew an N.

Der Alta – A rough beer-goggled English to German translation of "old man"

My surname sounds very similar and often butchered in many different translations. Even though it's only 5 letters. To date, I've seen at least 9 different configurations. About 7th grade I was called Old man by a teacher, and the moniker became my nickname. Amongst friends it was a joke, as I was usually the youngest of any member in the group. Even when I joined the Army, the nickname reared it's head as my Drill Sergeant instantly butchered it. As soon as I corrected him it was as good as branded on my forehead. That stuck with me until I was discharged 9 years later (1 active, 8 reserve).

The German Translation comes in from my heritage. I'm mostly German (yep, blond hair, blue eyes strong and rugged stature gives it away) and in fact, still have relatives living in Germany. Even though I visited them three years ago, I can't remember the town.

Registering as "Old man" didn't seem apropos in most places, so the translation to German was arrived at. The incorrect translation comes for a mis-understanding in my reception of the translation. The old man actually is: der alte Mann. Which I didn't figure out until a few years ago. At which point, I'd been going by "Der Alta" for 5 years.

And I've always signed my posts with "AO" as those are my real initials.

Well mine is pretty obvious really, this was the first site I ever went to and I thought I would get an option to put in a screen name rather than a username and after 50 posts I got pissed off, but GB said I could not change my username without loosing my old posts!

So there you are, the first net mistake I made! Also, I think when I speak my mind and am not drunk most of what I say to wind people up can be justified or I can find facts to justify it! So I do not care, I do not have a website or anything for people to piss me off on if I do irreprable damage either!

And on the few occasions when my opinions have pissed people off they have generally just insulted me in a rather childish manor hiding annonomously behind a funny name!!!

Which reminds me, isn't it about time I brough up Iraq now that major combat operations are over?

Before I had kids my wife and I would get a new Mustang every 2 years. This went on from 86 to 94. All my Chevy head friends would call it a Mustake. So the nick name stuck. The last Mustang we had was a Cobra SVT and we kinda just tagged on the SVT

I chose my username in haste one afternoon after buying GT1 and having a buncha questions. My name is Richard, and "the ricker" was a mid 80s television sitcom character. I think I may have posted this here before, but I can't remember so I'll post it again.

*trying to keep it short*

Santiago = spanish for "Saint James" // James = my real name (but I'm no saint )

22 = the date of my birth (April 22 if you're keeping track; inspired by the line in the Jermaine Dupri/Ludacris song "Welcome to Atlanta" where Ludacris raps "in fact I'm slappin' 'em up, Cadillac is the truck, I can't lose with 22s, *****, that's what's up!" I happened to be 22 years old at the time (24 now)...

So Santiago22 is my online handle, both here and in countless other places... if you do a Google search on Santiago22, you'll find quite a few results from other sites I frequent, though most of the results aren't actually me.

Well, there was more to the choice I guess ...

No offence to anyone in particular, but I didn't fancy pinning my colours to one car or another, and I'm not the type to hype myself with an "I am the greatest x y x" handle. 'player2' just kind of struck me. I knew I wasn't up to racing the fast guys on the numbers, because I'd been playing GT3 a long while before stumbling across the board, so player2 seemed a suitably humble handle to start off with; also, the name seemed to fit well with my mood changes, as many games can come up with "player 2 wins" or "game over player 2" in equal measure.

In considering more motoring-related handles, I did toy with the idea of "TurboFan" as it appealed to my sense of word play, but it's really an aeronautical pun rather than a motoring one.

So, player2 it was. Though I never expected to be around for more than a few weeks when I first posted!

Just my initials. Rather unimaginative, really.

A former handle I used (some years ago) was Sporothrix. It's the genus name of Sporothrix shenkii (shen-ki-eye), an opportunistic/saprophytic fungus and a really catchy name that's fun to say. It was a toss-us between that and another fungus called Mucor.

I had never noticed but I have seemed to pick up the habit of referring to my six year son as my "Little Buddy". I guess in his infinite wisdom he's decided to get back at me by calling me his "BigDaddy". I have been called many names in the past some good some bad. But this is the one I have grown most fond of.

So BD, are you the one who volunteers to spend the summer manning your boat out of Block Island? That sounds like it would be nice duty.

I would guess that in the winter there are a lot less boats sailing around, and those that are still around are more likely professionals. I'd guess the professionals would screw up and need help a lot less often than the summer recreational types, so winter is probably a lot easier on you.

On the other hand, winter is when you get the nasty storms too, so the calls you do get are probably more difficult.

I was the Block Island captain from 88-96, until Mini-BD#1 showed up. Then Mrs. BD pulled the plug. This year, Mrs. BD has been giving out hall passes on Wednesdays, which is the day off for our regular BI guy. As a matter of fact, I was on-island this afternoon.

You're right that this time of year is ridiculously busy for us. We do most of our on-the-water work between Memorial Day and Columbus Day. A typical weekend day between July 4 and Labor Day will have us doing 25-35 assistance jobs. We do a total of about 1000 per year. I've got tons of fun pictures of boats in places and situations where they don't belong.

September-November is storm season...that's the fun (and big-money) stuff. We generally never have to go out in the dead of winter, as our customers are almost exclusively recreational.

I'd say that about 50% of our jobs are due to legitimate mechanical trouble, while the other half have an underlying cause of poor seamanship.

Winter is prime GT3 time for me.

what p2 said about not being fast.

a 'mobile chicane' is of course a term often used to describe the idiot backmarker who coasts around causing trouble for the decent racers trying to lap him..
and after spending weeks absorbing the knowledge of the incredibly fast sounding 'numbone', 'sukerkin' & the rest, I certainly didn't want to give any impression of being quick!!

My first recollection of the term was James Hunt using it to describe the Ferraris when the first turbos were introduced into F1. Those Ferraris were pigs to drive, but boy could they go fast in a straight line. Consequently everyone could lap faster than them, but nobody could pass them in a race. Invariably, the front few cars would drive away in front of them, leaving a red led convoy in their wake. How things have changed!

I picked this nick when I was 12 years old... I was a newbie, so I followed the trend to come up with a screename by fusing an interest, the word "Kid", and my birth year.

If I could do it all over again, I'm not sure if I'd pick another nick. I'm HondaKid86 everywhere on the 'Net, so I've grown quite used to being called "HK". I really like it, actually.

I want to see Crazyhorse's explanation. And Thoasiii's. That can't be a real name with three "i"s, can it?

And what about Psyfalcon? Where'd he get that one? And rikki, since his name is really Gary. And many more I can't think of right now.

Come to think of it Nightcrawler, I want to see Thoasiii's explanation, too.

All I know is that it's not pronounced "Tho-sigh", as I first thaought many years ago, but "Toe-ass the 3rd". That explains the three "i's" The rest is a mystery.

So when you see us talking about someone named Toe, that's who we're talking about.

I'll admit that the first time I saw Thoasiii's name, I immediately thought "Thossy" like 'Cossie,' and that's how I've thought of it ever since, even though I've seen the explanation a few times.

I knew Thoasiii was Toe, but I didn't know the triple "i"s were a Roman numeral 3.

I had thought it was pronounced "Toe-ass-ie"

One of those spur of the moment nick names that stuck for no reason at all. It all started from a play on words from my last name (which we won't go there) and just went from bad to worse.

It became my call sign during my time in the Army while I was stuck with being a RTO and has been with me ever since. Out comes the movie Top Gun acouple of years later and I've heard "eeeeehaw Jesters' dead!" so many times I wish I had a dime for it.

My wife shortened it down to Jes, some thing I didn't mind at all - and there ya go.

Jes

Cool stories above.

'fraid mines a little more yawny.

Nuthin more than my initials in my handle!

Used to play defender as a kid and would sign V(my middle initial)B. I then started to sign Vee as it was quicker to press two e's than find the space/another letter. Plus it was what I was more increasingly known as or refered to as. It just fit.

Have signed off on highscores as 'crazyhorse' (where space allowed) for as long as I can remember - prolly started with some Commodore64 game or other.

Pretty sure it came from a very vivid image I had/have of Anthony Quinn in the on-screen role (Errol Flynn as Custer?). Possibily the first 'baddie' I thought was v. cool... until then, I thought being the 'goodie' was where it was at

Heh... and it was 'Thow-assie' for me
