Am I right in thinking that if you win GT Concept on a memory card which already contains a GT3 save, GT Concept updates your GT3 save with 10 mil credits and opens all licenses?

So this would save 48 game days in GT3 if you were to do it before running any license tests. However, for the purposes of my 'minimum days', I'm calling that method a foul.

Some ideas just won't die; still toying with the minimum number of garage cars to run...

Races 10 - 12: (A) Legend of Silver Arrow (3 laps x Trial Mtn, Super Speedway, Rome)

Started with the idea that I could drive better than the program, but no amount of skill would compensate for a lack of basic speed on the squished oval of SS, so started there.

Took the CLK55 for oil and tyres (T2), and gave it a try (remembering to set TCS=ASM=0 this time); but well off the pace. Reloaded and added a chip - still no joy. Reloaded and added stage 1 tailpipe along with the chip - and hey presto, a comfortable win ... but left me feeling like I might have done it with less mods. Anyway, that setup was an easy win at TM and a tight win at Rome after some reloads, due to some sloppy driving; the CLK55 is a little bit too much of a Panzer for the sharp conrners and my unsympathetic handling!

Prize Car: CLK Touring Car

It was a geographic issue - the car you're referring to is called a Miata MX-5 LS in the NTSC/US Version.

There two Miata MX-5s (an '89 and a '93, the '93 costing slightly less at the dealer), a 1.8RS, and the LS (your 1.8i).

It's okay... I actually intend on seeing if I can modify MK's program so it lists the names by NTSC instead of PAL... I'm like 90% sure it reads the names from an INI file... I wish there were fields to list all the different names, like

Name (NTSC): Miata MX-5 LS
Name (PAL): MX-5 1.8i
etc...

you know what I mean?

Well progress was made. I found out that MKGE reads the car names (as well as all the parts data) from the GT3gEdit.ini file... but there's another file - GT3USnam.ini - that has the NTSC car names (but no parts data).

All I had to do was:
- Rename GT3gEdit.ini to GT3gEdit.UK.ini
- Rename GT3USnam.ini to GT3gEdit.ini
- Copy all the data minus the car names from the UK file to the US file.

Now all my cars are listed by their NTSC names in MK's program.

That discovery probably saved me a few weeks' work.

Goddammit! Shouldn't have been driving the Mada MX-5 1.8i (Miata LS) if I wanted the "15 garage cars" win. (See LDM's "Soliloquy" diary thread for details, but briefly, needed to be driving the 1989 MX-5(J) so it would also be valid for "80's cup"))

Question: whether to punish myself by physical abuse or mental torture. Answer: the latter.

Santiago22, it took a while. Having golded it at least 7 times previously (as with all license tests), I thought I knew what I had to do ... but still couldn't find the technique again. Then it clicked - I was chasing my previous PB ghost, an Autobox run, and it was beating me to the corner! Solution, short-shift up as you reach the first jump, so you hit the ground running smoothly in the next gear up. After that, it was just a case of retrying until I nailed the apex on the inside kerb.

That's probably why I have a hard time with this test in particular - I've always played MT and I rev the engine all the way up until it's about to cut the ignition before I shift...

Well, that wraps it up for license tests for the time being. I don't suppose I'll ever run through all the license tests again, as I've saved off a copy of 'perfect' day 49, with every license being a new personal best now that I'm driving in-car and with manual shift. Though I suppose there's an outside chance of running a few of them again in competition, especially (obviously) the R and S series.

Think I'll just go and take another look at that memory card again ... there's something pointlessly satisfying about having all 48 PB license test saves lined up on the memory card in precise order B-1, B-2, ... , R-8.

That's exactly the way I've been doing them for the last couple instalments of the game.

It is to see though.

Enjoying your progress through the game in car and manual p2. You don't (or at least you haven't put it down) how hard/easy you've been finding the transition. Any thoughts... printable of course!!??

VB, to someone of your consumate skill, I can only think that my incompetent fumblings fade into insignificance, and that such a question would only be a subtle way to poke fun at my meagre efforts ... but, as I know you to be a true gentleman, I believe you are asking out of genuine interest...

The first couple of license tests were easy to improve using manual, because my previous PB had been performed without using the 'hold gear' trick, and therefore all I had to do was gear change at optimal (higher than default auto) revs.

Once I came to tests with corners in, there was a learing curve to surmount, but after a little experimentation it became clear how to benefit from engine braking and being in the right gear at the right time to hit the gas on the corner exit.

A-7, as described above, was a revelation, because it was the first time that I came across a case where short-shifting was advantageous.

At first, I was continually messing up the gearshifts; when turning left, I'd invariably shift down even when meaning to shift up, and when turning right, I'd invariably shift up even when meaning to shift down. But these mistakes gradually became less frequent, and while I still sometimes make them, they are now an exception.

As for the rest of the tests, none of them seemed to be very difficult to improve upon (by which I mean that the time taken to gain a PB on manual was not noticeably more than the time taken to achieve the old PB on auto), until the later stages. The ones which stumped me for a while, that I remember, were S-7, R-6 and R-7... but I recall that those were all pretty difficult in the original runs anyway.

One final thought - my GT3 driving in the last couple of weeks or so has been more intense than ever before, by a long chalk, and I must assume that that has been of substantial benefit when it came to running the latter stages of these license tests - in short, it is not clear that my results on those 'difficult' ones are better than they would have been if I had expended the same effort using the old view and gearshift.

The one downside I've noticed about driving manual is that I've developed new RSI stress points at the base of my 3rd finger on each hand, and strained the top joint of each forefinger, with the intense driving (ie. clenching the D/S II tightly for long periods and straining to keep fingers ready for gearshifts) during this period.

I started to pootle through the rather easy 20% or so that is Arcade/Single. I started off running the Viper Oreca at SuperSpeedway (see starts & styles) but couldn't beat the R390 and GT-One; so I ran SuperSpeedway and Midfield in the Altezza RS200, but that was boring, boring, boring - too easy a win. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I decided to go back and rerun SuperSpeedway in a different car, and in an interesting contrast to my stated goal of 100% win with fewest garage cars driven, decided to see how far I could get using a different arcade car for each of the Arcade/Singles (obviously running only 'Hard' mode, otherwise I'd run out of cars before I finished).

I have just read through my preceding posts to find my "stated goals" for this game - but it seems I didn't mention them! I'm aiming primarily for minimum garage cars driven and also for minimum game days, which are not mutually exclusive goals. I had thought I was also maybe aiming for minimum cash spent, but that is really mutually exclusive with the other goals, since you'd use a variety of better cars at some stages in order to avoid paying for upgrades to the minimal list of cars. But one secondary goal which I think I still can aim for is not selling off the prize cars, at least until I have spare duplicates of the same model. Also, I wondered about minimum milage, which, when combined with minimum game days, boils down to "no qualifying and no driving the wrong way" (The tricky bit comes on time-limited enduro races, since winning by excess laps would count against achieving minimum milage! )

I bought me a 1989 MX-5(J) to be getting on with, and it's surprising how many races can be taken in this car with only trivial upgrades.

I did figure out that there are a few traps in the game when aiming for the goals above; one I am calling the UDT (unmodified/days trap) and a similar one I am calling the NATT (normally aspirated/turbo trap). These are both manifestations of the fact that if your car is not currently in spec for the race you intend to run, it is going to take one day to go and change the parts on the car to make it valid - and unless there is a suitable race where you can go and change the settings while winning a new race, you are going to blow the minimum days goal by losing a day at the workshop. For example, with the MX-5(J), you may have added some engine mods for 80s cup or beginners NA, but when you decide to go for the Roadster Enduro, you find that you have either to blow the minimum days by going and making the car 'unmodified' again before you enter the enduro, or blow the minimum cars by taking a fresh MX-5 to run the Roadster Enduro. Similarly, if your car is currently sporting a Turbo, but you want to enter an NA race with that car (or vice versa), you will need to blow a day at the Run&Settings shop to modify the car unless there's a non-specific race you can run (and win!) in between.

This is something to watch, and requires a little planning on which cars will be used for 'unmodified' events, where you need to run the 'unmodified' race first or directly after an event where 'unmodified' is good enough to win, and which cars (if any) will be used in both aspiration classes, where it is necessary to run one non-aspiration-specific event in between two opposing aspiration-specific events.

Anyway, here's what fun I've had so far in the old 80's MX-5:

Next bought a Tuscan with T2's, and won four rounds of P18:Tuscan racing by miles,

Well, I had some fun squeezing out the last little bit (at least for my competence) which the MX-5 could muster. The story is here.

Been reading this diary for some time now, it's great to see someone has the patience and detirmination to do something like this, and then restart it again when he wasnt happy!

I'm impressed

The more I read this forums closely the more I'm noticing many people using Automatic Gearboxes, whilst this isn't really the place to ask, how can Automatic be faster than manual? I know there is that 'Neutral' trick thing with Automatic but I've never actually even bothered trying Auto in GT3 at all :/

Keep up the good work P2, I look forward to seeing you post 100% completion one day!

Thanks Ubiquitous, and welcome to the numbers. To satisfy your enthusiasm, here's another slice of stats!

NumbOne, thanks for the suggestion on using Arcade Free Run to re-tune cars without using days. You've allowed me to squeeze out another trophy from my MX-5(Miata)!

Santiago22, the Evo IV in Scotia White also makes an entirely suitable car for all teh Evo/4WD/Rally races. I think I only had to resort to Turbo3 twice or so.

Anyway ...

A few more results to add. Winning P21 with an Altezza was fun! Tuscan for P20 was a mismatch - one or more laps margin every round!

Just in case anyone thought I'd given up on this! I'm thinking that the Altezza can do all the donkey work up to the point where I need the Zonda, so there's no point in taking a Zexel or Calsonic for my GT-R; I'll get more fun out of a bog standard R32 V spec II. (The GTS-t is valid too, but not up to the job of winning both Red Emblems.) Anyway progress to date (90%) below, and onwards to Red Emblems and the remaining Enduros.

OK. Last time, I said I would let the Altezza do the donkey work; well, I was surprised by just how much donkey work it was capable of ... and mostly at Turbo=Normal, too!

So I reach this pivotal moment in my second run through GT3. 14 garage cars driven, all but 2 events complete (Avant Garde & Formula GT). I guess this save point must be "decision time"! The goals for "p2 v2", which I said were not conflicting, now turn out to be conflicting after all; I can go for minimum game days and very low mileage if I take 16 garage cars; but if I go for 15 garage cars, it'll take me more game days (not winning FGT with 100% win ration at the first go) and more mileage (needing to qualify and to rerun rounds).

I guess the prudent path is to take the easy "16 garage car" win to get the other stats, then come back to this 97.5% save to try a second 'out shot' for the "15 garage cars" win.

I finally get around to posting the 'easy' finish which I accomplished just as my PC failed a while back.

Thanks 76brick!

I guess I can also say that that "Total Genuine Car Milage" is also the lowest ever recorded, since no-one else has probably ever counted theirs! It is actually pretty low by virtue of never having qualified for any race, and by virtue of having completed the time-limited events in an 'impossibly low' number of laps! (I held back the AI by a couple of laps, so I could win in less laps than the AI would normally complete! ) But OTOH since I always let the 2nd place AI complete his run, I guess I wasted a few hundred km while letting auto-drive clock up km during this time (these auto-drive km at the end of a race really do get added to the car's milage!)

Now I'm in a dilemma ... whether to spend my (now limited) available time on trying the impossible 15 car finish, or on my newly started "p2 goes wheelie" game, currently at 5.1%, 0/0 wins, prize cars 3 ...
